BIO:

My Raining Stars was formed by Thierry Haliniak as a solo project in 1998. In the early 90s, Thierry was in a band called Nothing To Be Done that performed with artists such as The Boo Radleys, Adorable, and Moose. Being raised by much of the music of those times, especially influenced by the legendary c86 era and bands from Creation and Sarah Records, Thierry has a knack of writing classic pop songs.

For the next 10 years, Thierry recorded demos on his 4-track tape recorder before Didier Frahier (ex-Nothing To Be Done, E-grand) offered to help re-record and re-arranged some of his best tracks. In 2008, these songs would become My Raining Star’s debut album "From St Saviour To Quickwell."

In 2014, Thierry upgraded his home studio to allow him more arrangement possibilities. In November 2020, he released a digital EP called "Obvious Reasons" with featured song lyrics by his friend Gilles Ramey.

Just after the EP release, Thierry formed a new side-project called Meyverlin with Gilles Ramey and Philippe Lavergne (ex-Freluquets). In October 2021, they released their debut album "Daily Events" on the French indie label Too Good To Be True.

During this time, Thierry grew closer to Casper Iskov (Ethics), a talented young Danish multi-instrumentalist, who offered to help him record real drums and bass on his songs as well as mix and master them. In early 2022, Thierry had completed the ten songs that will become the second My Raining Stars album "89 Memories." The album will be released on June 17, 2022 by Shelflife (US) and Disco de Kirlian (Spain) on digital and compact disc formats. "89 Memories" is an album particularly close to Thierry’s heart and one he is immensely proud of.

REVIEWS:

"These more instantaneous moments breathe vitality into Haliniak’s body of work that will surely win the hearts and minds of many new fans sooner rather than later. My Raining Stars have made a name for themselves by reimagining Sarah Records, Creation Records, and the C86 scene for the modern day. On ‘If You’, ‘Too Soon’, and ‘Behind Her Lovely Smile’ they tread similar water. ‘If You’ plunges into the hazy beauty of Chapterhouse via New order’s ‘Ceremony’. ‘Too Soon’ combines the explorative drumming of ‘Vapour Trail’ with the eloquent beauty of the Cocteau Twins on this lo-fi gem. ‘Behind Her Lovely Smile’ however whilst drawing on Ride’s comeback album ‘Weather Diaries’ begins to transgress the past. The guitars are blessed with rock ‘n roll’s desperation to live; a moment Johnny Marr would be proud of! Haliniak’s ability to use his voice as the songs blissful release is utterly mesmerising. ‘89 Memories’ ultimate strength is its positivity. In a world falling apart at the seams, the ecstasy of ‘The Way Things Turn’ and ‘Of ‘Time’ couldn’t be more vital. The former is a brooding lullaby sent from the angels. The beauty of The Orchids is met with brooding yet angelic Mark Gardener-esque vocal from Haliniak. It has great cinematic quality. The protagonist is thrust into the inciting moment and must seek out the light. Twisting and turning, desperate to fight their way to resolution, this track will not give up! Whereas, ‘Time’ taps into the jangle of The la’s and the power of The Real People to find new avenues of euphoria. What keeps the album refreshing is Haliniak’s foray into more rock ‘n’ roll guitar playing. His sumptuous Ian Broudie-esque vocals on ‘From the Day She’s Gone’ is met with a direct and anguished urgency. The guitars brood in the verses before bursting into a display of melancholy reaching for escapism worthy of Johnny Marr. Whereas, ‘Sit and Stare’ takes Norman Blake’s melodic rumble to the edge of Weller and Craddock in the 90s. These more instantaneous moments breathe vitality into Haliniak’s body of work that will surely win the hearts and minds of many new fans sooner rather than later. "
Mike from Travellers' Tunes

"On the wings of the fairly deserved broad response met by the debut of the Meyverlin project in collaboration with Philippe Lavergne at the end of last year, confidently returns under his My Raining Stars moniker, fueled by the rhythmic energy of Danish multi-instrumentalist Casper Blond, to craft an effortless evocation of breezy and crystalline melodic pop-laced indie guitar sound, which, while wandering on familiar sound aesthetic from the period between the late 80s and 90s (Creation, Sarah, C86), to which the title refers, at times with hints of Britpop, retain a natural fluidity and freshness, through an array of clear and gentle guitar arpeggios, jangly chiming melodies, a dynamic rhythm section, and colorings of airy keyboards that intertwine to build angsty, whimsical moods of heartache and longing, stirring the soul with high and dreamy vocal comfort delivering vulnerable authenticity and nostalgia from life’s rickety road of romance."
Fabrizio Lusso from White Light / White Heat

"After last year’s fairly acclaimed first album from his side-project Meyverlin with Gilles Ramey and Philippe Lavergne (ex-Freluquets), French retro Anglophile Indie Pop melodist Thierry Haliniak returns, more confident than ever, under his usual solo alter ego My Raining Stars, established in 1998, with a scintillating infectious new single, titled “If You”, taken from the forthcoming sophomore album, “89 Memories“, due out on June 7, 2022, via Shelflife (US) and Discos De Kirlian (EU), recorded with the precious support of talented young Danish multi-instrumentalist Casper Blond (Ethics) on Bass, Drums and Mixer duties. The new tune is augmented by a day-dreamy video, by Amandine Shoe, WL//WH is pleased to Premiere. “If You” is an intimate confession to a loved one that seeks to forge new bonds of love and trust whilst emerging from the shame and secrecy of past trauma.
Instant scents of Sea Urchins and The Lighting Seeds come quickly to mind to fade into the ear-worming and intoxicating dreamlike moods, crammed with twinkling pain-filled guitar melodies that strum and jangle in soul-stirring unison, to weave hope and agony through low comforting bass pulses and heart skipping, syncopated drum beats, amid swirling airy keyboard soars, caressing the high angst of emotional vocal harmonies with an immersive sensibility of melancholy and delight.
Whimsical and stimulating video by Amandine Shoe stirs shape-shifting clouds, sparkling celestial lights, and spinning visions into a dizzying array of inspirational thought forms around an intimate, magnetic performance to draw bittersweet nostalgia and future ambition from the mind’s eye of revelation. Neon-lavender fused auras fuse vintage clips, universal symbols, and outer-spacey imagery with the mercurial emotional moods of the soundtrack, whilst hypnotic overlays bloom into floral motifs, strobing lights, and astronomical suggestions to incite feelings of joy, excitement, and mystery from a groovy imaginarium of untapped dreams. My Raining Stars‘ forthcoming 10-track album, “89 Memories” is slated for release, on Digital and Compact Disc formats, on June 17, 2022, via Shelflife Records (US) and Discos De Kirlian (EU). Keep up with My Raining Stars:

"Just a short hop across Europe for the number nine, to France and the project from Thierry Haliniak, My Raining Stars, who released his exceptional sophomore album ‘89 Memories‘, where he delivers his own take on the C86 influences of his formative years and gives them a new, fresh take. Released very recently, on 17 June, as a co-release between Shelflife Records and Disco De Kirlian, this album represents the sophomore album from My Raining Stars, after ‘From St Saviour To Quickwell’, in 2008. The band’s origins lie in the late 90’s, when mainman Thierry Haliniak formed the band as a solo project. Prior to then, he started his musical journey as a member of the band Nothing To Be Done, performing alongside such shoegaze luminaries as The Boo Radleys, Adorable and perhaps the band that could be considered as the progenitors of the shoegaze scene, Moose. Opener ‘Behind Her Lovely Smile’ has a classic C86 indie pop feel, with all the fizz and sugar-coated jangle that was so loved in that era, and is still to be heard in many of the indie pop bands around now, wearing their influences on their shirts. It bounds along with the energy of the Field Mice, Pooh Sticks et al. Next track ‘If You’ keeps the vibe going sweetly and joyously, flowing along on waves of glittering guitar swirl and sparkle. The synth sweeps and glides as though rushing through clouds on a breeze. On ‘The Way Things Turn‘, I cannot help but think of latter day Ride, as the vocals definitely sound reminiscent of Mr M Gardener. It could easily sit on their ‘Weather Diaries‘ or ‘This Is Not A Safe Place’ comeback albums, which is high praise indeed. It takes a good sense of the bittersweet effect of music and how the delivery of the lyrics can effect the feeling in a song, such is the case with third track ‘Sit And Stare‘, where the sad lyrics juxtapose with the sweet melodies created by the band. “There’s nothing you can say, to ease my pain…” is a perfect example of this…its a sad line, but sounds happy and uplifting because the music is triggering you emotionally in the opposite manner to how the story is developing. ‘Too Soon‘ has the punchy drums sprinkled throughout the song, adding a perky, joyous kick to the honey-glazed guitar, a sugar-coated jangle that fizzes sweetly by, and then like any sugar-rush, it’s all over in a flash. ‘From The Day She’s Gone‘ is another delightfully jaunty swish hat delivers a sense of things coming good, even if they appear not so good on the surface, the shimmering guitars and bouncy drums rocking along in spritely fashion…One of life’s great ubiquitous idioms are questions, indeed as the legendary Johnny Nash declared “there are more questions than answers…”, which just means that there are some questions that are hard to answer, and others that may be impossible to. I say this because ‘Questions‘ just happens to be the title of the next track, and what a splendid track it is, the opening coda the merest thrum of guitar before kicking off with a blast of the drum and the guitar blazing in, roaring in with intent, barely relenting as the song races along with delicious energy. I have always had a great fascination for the Universe, and all that it contains, from when I was at school gazing up at the stars and the moon, to the here and now with how it all came to be, and where it will all end up…which sort of ties into this next track, appropriately entitled ‘Universe‘, where the theme of finding our place in the Universe is referred to obliquely, the song tells of a woman who feels more at home in the Universe than here in this world, as Man has looked up at the stars and pondered the big questions about existence and if there is life elsewhere. There is something of a recurring theme running through the last few tracks, including this one, with the title itself giving a hint as to the theme, this track is entitled ‘Time‘, which has been a question asked for perhaps thousands of years, so it seems appropriate for the penultimate track to be so titled. A sublime beauty of a track, oozing poise and glimmer, he persistent rhythms letting the song breathe, bringing a smile to your face and joy in your heart. Album closer ‘Emptiness‘ is the perfect ending to a joyous and uplifting album, that still manages to tug at your heartstrings, even with the fuzz, shimmer, jangle and glittery sparkle. The swirling, spacey guitars take a hold and keep their beatific grip as you wash amongst the clouds, maybe this is what it’s like to be in a glider plane, just riding the air, unfettered, free, what a thrilling, beautiful journey it has been. In conclusion, a fine sophomore album, with much to savour, delight and taste again, without ever getting tired of the delicious flavours on offer within. Why Thierry, with these gifts you are spoiling us…
I highly recommend that you purchase a copy of this excellent album
Wayne Walls from The Keeper Of The gaze

"89 Memories" is a fine forty-minute journey through dreamy dream pop expanses. Its atmosphere is closest to the recent works of the Ride, and it even reminded me of them vocally. The guitars playing in Too Soon or From the Days She's Gone simply puts a smile on your face. There is nothing new, nothing revolutionary, just beautiful, beautiful music that you can listen to on any occasion, without any special preparations."
Predrag Brlek from Terapija

"There’s that nostalgic carousel of jangling guitar licks chiming through your speaker. All that, dreaminess, yet its still the warmth of Thierry’s voice beckoning you to dive further into what’s lurking in this new LP." Austin Town Hall

"It is the duo Shelflife (USA) and Discos de Kirlian (Spain) that ensure a good distribution to the valuable new album by My Raining Stars, a project by the good Thierry Haliniak who this time got a hand from Casper Blond, on bass and on the battery. Of course the writing of the songs is all firmly in the hands of Thierry who invites us to close our eyes and take that ideal musical time machine, capable of making us travel into the past, while putting us off on our sofa. The pen of the Frenchman is firm and intriguing, which sublimates and enhances his delicious refrains by inserting them in a fabulous guitar-pop context that brings us back to the first magic of the Creation Records house. Mid-tempo that embrace jangle pop, but also some echoes of House Of Love, in a more cheeky version, if you'll allow us the example, to such an extent that sometimes it slips (with pleasure) almost into the guitar-pop of the '00s 90s made in the UK."
Riccardo Cavrioli from Indie For Bunnies

"89 Memories opens with Behind Her Lovely Smile. The vocal inspiration of Andy Bell and Ride seems obvious regarding My Raining Stars . But don’t take my word for it, preorder / listen here.Behind Her Lovely Smile features super crisp and splashy cymbals. Solid beats and warm bass thuds. The synth sound in the background adds an air of mystique. At about two minutes the vocals drop out and you get a satisfying breakdown. Classic 80’s synth begins to gently nudge itself further into the foreground of the mix as it winds down. A fun pop number. My Raining Stars – June 17th – releases on Shelflife Records
Sit and Stare is a relaxing, yet powerful pop song with some underlying tension. Judging by the title, I don’t rule out that My Raining Stars may have surveillance on me for what I do most of my day. Seriously though, the overall arrangement is cohesive. The guitar pines and sighs but in a way that gives cathartic relief. Maybe some subtle overdrive added for emphasis? This is possibly my favorite one on here due to the chorus part where the vocals come back in …and entire arrangement. Earnest vocals asking ” Is there something I can do..” All of this makes it a winner. The Way Things Turn may remind one of RIDE or Oasis due to the melodious vocal delivery and arrangement.A subtle undercurrent of strings trickles through the mix. Reflective, introspective, and perhaps bittersweet. This or Sit and Stare is a great option for an indie playlist that needs a track to bring a more sedate energy into it. At two minutes give or take a few seconds the synth leans towards shrill high tone paired with haunting vocals. A highlight moment for the track. Could be tied for favorite song on 89 memories. Too Soon features A Vapor Trail (RIDE) like drum beat, guitar intro and additional guitars that remind me of Chapterhouse Whirlpool. Maybe “Pearl” and a few others from that LP. A little wah like squawk and the track is off to the races. At about 2 min and a half the guitars volumes swell, maybe the result of a disengaged wah or volume knob pedal trickery and Too Soon leaves Vapor Trail behind for an outro that sounds cut from some of the great Manchester sounds of the 90’s. I will abstain from naming bands as I know the sound but am not extremely well versed on specific bands and songs. Questions is a song that could have easily been inspired by the defunct 90’s Sarah records label.Additionally label and bands like those as well. Think Summershine, Slumberland , maybe Spin Art. You get the idea, hopefully if not, it’s an opportunity to check this band out and others to come before them. The tonality on Questions is upbeat, bubbly and maybe the fastest in BPM on this LP. Next, Universe drives bass and drums hard whilst the guitar phase sweeps up and down. Textural, and reminscient of the dance inspired 90’s alternative indie pop, Universe expands and gives opportunity to stretch out and groove. Again I dare not give reference though, I know the general sound but can’t pinpoint bands and songs. Universe is no less fun though. After that is Time. This track is arguably as good as the rest. After repeated listens, I don’t know why I am fixated with the “bell” hits on the cymbal. As I listen I start to hone in on the drumming in general. It is highly likely that the drums are not turned up on this one track. Also I doubt My Raining Stars consciously focused on this. It is probably how my brain and ears perceive this song. The intro guitar melody , very hum worthy. I guess writing a blog in ’22 can make one like me (more) eccentric. The closer song Emptiness saunters in with some more bittersweet sounds. Synth laying down a melancholy wash. Subtle backing vocals which add to the sentiment of Emptiness (conceptually). Without dissecting the lyrics, Emptiness ends 89 Memories leaving me with a sense of mystery and desolation. Did a lover leave? Do I suffer from some other loss? Is it depression? It is not all woeful and bleak. Seems introspective though. There is enough uplifting instrumentation (strums, rhythms, vocal changes) to prevent Emptiness from going into a full spiral of sadness. In conclusion 89 Memories is an LP that could live next to your favorite shoegaze records. However it doesn’t rely on heavy reverb/delays and fuzz though. It’s more driven by clean and crisped up guitars. 89 Memories captures more of the indie pop sound as far as writing and playing. Thus I say it is worth some spins if not many depending on how much indie pop you prefer. If you are a fan of the very late 80’s / 90’s stuff I mention above you may be missing out if you don’t give this your ears."
John Desmet from Meatsheetfanzine

"My Raining Stars is the solo project of Thierry Haliniak, who has commanded his act since the late 90s (and some of the sound of that decade was brought to his essence that he doesn't let go of). And it should be emphasized that before this, Thierry played in a shoegazer sound cover band like The Boo Radleys, Moose or Adorable, so we must assume that that guitar echo of protagonist pedals and semi-muffled nostalgic voices will not stop so easily be his hallmarks.
We can see this in his most recent studio album, 89 Memories. Her jangle and dreampop-influenced indie pop style takes us back to those days when the Sarah and Creation Records labels shone with such a special and radiant light that the independent scene had to surrender to her strength. And here we recover something of that mood, of that romantically alternative echo that inspires so many things together at the same time.On this 10-song tracklist, Thierry enlisted the help of Casper Blond, a Danish multi-instrumentalist who not only got into drums and bass, but also mixed and mastered in order to achieve a more dynamic sound. organic and human for these inspiring songs, the same ones that feel "close to the heart", as he himself considers it.
If you're not over 90 (and don't intend to be soon) and are looking for sweet melodies for warm summer and cool fall, and for those delicate sound waves to generate auras of feeling around your eardrums, then you're in the right place and in the company. of the perfect band"
Alex Bueno from Svmusica

"In the early 1990s, French musician Thierry Haliniak was part of the group Nothing To Be Done, which connected well with the then prevailing alternative Britpop bands. That love never left was also evident from his solo project My Raining Stars, with which he started in 1998. He recorded no less than 10 demos for this, after which his debut From St Savior To Quickwell was finally released in 2008. On this you will find a moody mix of indie pop, dream pop and shoegaze, which brings back warm memories of the early 90s. After that a digital epee was released. Haliniak (vocals, electric guitar, keyboards) gets to know the Danish musician Casper Blond of the group Ethics, who offers to help him, especially with the drums and bass parts. As a result, songs that would otherwise have remained on the shelves have now been dusted off and ended up on his second album 89 Memories. Incidentally, Haliniak has also started the group Meyverlin again, the debut of which was released last year; the British sound dominates there too. And that is no different on the new My Raining Stars. It is once again a nostalgic way to enjoy the styles mentioned. Wonderfully back in time, without sounding dated. As if you turn on the radio where they play a mix of Tears For Fears, Pale Saints, The Field Mice, The Blue Airplanes, Slowdive, The Lightning Seeds and Sophia. How nice is that?"

"89 Memories" is a fine forty-minute journey through dreamy dream pop expanses. Its atmosphere is closest to the recent works of the Ride, and it even reminded me of them vocally. The guitars playing in Too Soon or From the Days She's Gone simply puts a smile on your face. There is nothing new, nothing revolutionary, just beautiful, beautiful music that you can listen to on any occasion, without any special preparations. As I wrote, right after the summer, the new EP "The Life We Planned" arrived, which embarrassed me even more, but obviously not enough to sit down and write something right away. It took me almost two months to force myself again. Not that I wasn't listening. I listened. And that feels so good to me again, that I didn't even know what to write. I would prefer to start and end reviews like this with one word. G.R.E.A.T.! And that's it! But, Mirror 2, as the first song on the EP, started faster than expected. It's probably their fastest and most cheerful song they've ever recorded. But On His Own immediately brings you back to dream mode, and how Summer's Gone sounds, I don't even need to write, you know from the name of the song. It goes right in line with those "hymns to the summer", which I can listen to until exhaustion when the summer is over. And so those quarter of an hour, which is how long the EP lasts, pass quickly and now I don't know if I should wait for the new release or if I should publish this anyway! So, here it is! Listen to My Raining Stars!"
Predrag Brlek from Terapija

"14 years after his first album , Haliniak returns to activity under the name My Raining Stars and releases a new album titled 89 Memories, a co-production between Shelflife (USA) and Discos de Kirlian (Spain). Ten songs in which the French musician's mature writing manages to balance fresh indiepop impulses, shoegaze melancholy and Brit-pop breezes. The result is a lovely mixtape with many colors, all very bright."
Polaroid Blogspot

"After some demos, a debut album released in 2008 and an EP which came out in 2020, Thierry is gearing up for the release of the second My Raining Stars album, 89 Memories, created with the help of Danish multi-instrumentalist, Casper Blond (Ethics). The sound of My Raining Stars draws from the shoegaze pop vanguard, mentioning inspiration from the c86 era and bands from Creation and Sarah Records. First single, If You, is a jangly and melodic venture which definitely accomplishes its objective of uniting those inspirations in a tidy package."
Destroyexist

"On the upcoming 89 Memories Thierry collaborates with young Danish multi-instrumentalist Casper Blond (Ethics) who played drums and bass on the new songs, and also provided mixing and mastering.
If You is the first example of the new material by My Raining Stars, a classic-sounding shoegaze/dreampop track with an engaging melody and an altogether attractive listen."

"Ten tracks of gorgeous shimmering guitar pop. Excellent"

"Love this song The Way Things Turn from My Raining Stars, very 90s feel like Ride, Adorable and Catherine Wheel."

"Creation Records fans! The new My Raining Stars it out! Ok, so not on Creation but it probably woulda been if it was released 25 years ago " Tim Hinely

"Wonderful! It strikes me as a blend of 10 years of indie music made distinctive by your own sensibility and musicianship"
Peter Willett
